Vinton G. Cerf

Major Academic Achievements:


Vinton started out at Stanford, earning his bachelor's degree in mathematics, and then attended UCLA, earning a master's degree and doctorate in computer science. At UCLA, he worked with others to write the communication protocol for the ARPANET and measured and tested the performance of it.

Contribution to Computer Science:


While working on the ARPANET, he met Kahn and later Kahn asked him to help develop a new network. This turned into a blueprint of the ARPA Internet, and they produced TCP/IP protocols. Later after his work on the Internet, he was the vice president at MCI Communications Corporation, then at the Corporation for National Research Initiatives, and finally at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. Along with this he also served on government panels and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, the French Legion of Honour, etc. Most recently, he has been the Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist at Google.
